Our Water

Living on Prince Edward Island, you may not think about your water usage that often. It seems logical that since we are surrounded by water, there would naturally be an abundance of suitable water. Well, that's just not the case.

Each day, Charlottetown's water comes from deep groundwater resources at the Winter River Watershed. Rainwater flows through the ground to several wells that then pump the water into the City of Charlottetown. As the demand throughout the day increases, the City draws on water from the different pumping stations to fulfill the need. To accommodate all Charlottetown residents, demand for water is typically 4.2 millions gallons over a 24-hour period.  We have on average 3 million gallons in storage, with one third maintained at all times for fire safety. As you can see, there is a very large amount of water required to supply to the City and its current usage.

So, can Mother Nature not take care of our water supply? Sometimes. When we have a considerably heavy rainfall, however, there is too much water for the groundwater beds to absorb which can then cause run-off. The Winter River Watershed takes in as much water as it can handle, but at times there is just too much water. This large amount of water is no longer able to be used for our water supply, and is directed into our streams and eventually into the ocean.

With climate change and the increased growth in our urban areas, the amount of water we require continues to increase. The current usage of water is 305L per Charlottetown resident per day. That's almost double the amount of water used by each European per day. While many residents are doing well with their water consumption, there is more that can be done to help with our water usage. With moderation and some adjusting, we will be able to maintain the quality of water that we enjoy and that our residents expect as we continue to grow.

The Charlottetown Water Utility is proud to offer such great quality water to all of our residents, and have been doing so since 1888 when the original infrastructure was installed. We want to continue to offer this same excellent standard of water but we need your help. That's why we are asking everyone to join in our Be Water Friendly mission by taking small steps to help reduce their water usage by 60 L per day.

To get started, go to our TIPS page and select one that works best for you and your family. You will be surprised at just how much water you can save in a day. Plus, less water may mean a reduction in your utility bill - a great reason to Be Water Friendly!
